“Glass is glass,” people assume — until they discover a single window can be clear, safe, private, cool, and quiet, all depending on the type you choose. Here is the plain-English guide.
Clear float glass
The basic, fully transparent glass. Fine for low windows and where safety is not a concern, but it breaks into sharp shards — so it is not ideal at floor level or in doors.
Toughened (tempered) glass
Heat-treated to be 4–5× stronger than ordinary glass. If it breaks, it crumbles into small, blunt granules instead of dangerous shards. This is the safety standard for doors, large panels, railings, and anywhere people might walk into it. “Toughened” and “tempered” mean the same thing.
Laminated glass
Two panes bonded with a clear interlayer. If it cracks, the pieces stay stuck to the film — so it holds together. Best for overhead glazing, skylights, balcony railings, and security. It also reduces noise.
Frosted & patterned glass
Translucent glass that gives privacy while letting light through. Available in plain satin frost and decorative patterns — leaf, floral, mandala, geometric. The go-to for bathrooms and bedrooms. See our frosted glass guide for bathrooms.
Low-E (low-emissivity) glass
Has an invisible coating that reflects heat while letting light in. In Tamil Nadu’s climate it keeps rooms cooler and protects furniture from UV fading. Excellent for sun-facing windows.
Solar-control glass
Tinted or coated to reflect a large share of the sun’s heat while keeping the view. Ideal for facades, west-facing rooms, and large glazed areas.
