Windows are one of the few decisions in a new home that affect comfort every single day for decades — and one of the hardest to change later. Here is a simple framework to get them right the first time.
1. Start with how each room is used
Walk through your plan room by room:
- Bedrooms — prioritise quiet and ventilation. Casement or uPVC windows seal tightly.
- Living room — prioritise light and views. Large sliding windows or aluminium spans work well.
- Bathrooms & kitchen — prioritise privacy and moisture resistance. Frosted glass and ventilators.
2. Match the window style to the opening
- Sliding — space-saving, great for balconies and passages.
- Casement — opens fully outward for maximum airflow and the tightest seal.
- Tilt & turn — premium flexibility: tilt for trickle ventilation, turn to open fully.
- Fixed — pure light and view where you do not need to open.
3. Choose glass for your orientation
West and south-facing rooms get the harshest sun in Tamil Nadu. For those, consider Low-E or solar-control glass to cut heat. For privacy, choose frosted; for safety and noise, laminated. Our glass guide explains each type.
4. Get the measurements right
Insist on a site measurement before fabrication — never order from rough builder dimensions. A millimetre matters for a clean, weather-tight fit.
5. Set a realistic budget
Windows are not the place to cut the last rupee — they are sealed into your walls. Spend on the frame quality and glass that affect comfort; save on quantity of openable panels if needed.
6. The questions to ask every supplier
- What profile brand and chamber count are you quoting?
- Is the glass toughened? What thickness?
- Is steel reinforcement included for large panels?
- Do you do the site measurement and installation yourselves?
- What is the warranty, and will I get a GST invoice?
A good supplier answers all of these without hesitation. (We are happy to.)
